General questions
When should I see a urologist?
Book a visit for blood in the urine, pain or burning when passing urine, pain in the side or back, a weak or interrupted stream, repeated urine infections, or concerns about fertility or sexual health. If you have severe pain with fever, or cannot pass urine at all, go to an emergency department straight away.
Does every kidney stone need surgery?
No. Many small stones pass with fluids and medicine. Larger stones, or stones causing a blockage or infection, may need ESWL, laser surgery or PCNL. The right option depends on the stone's size and position, which is assessed at your consultation.
Can I consult online?
Yes. Video consultations run Monday to Thursday, 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, and can be booked through Marham.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring previous reports, ultrasound or CT scans, recent urine and blood tests, and a list of the medicines you take. Arriving a few minutes early helps the clinic stay on time.
How do I book?
Use the Book appointment button to choose a clinic or video visit. You can book online through Oladoc or Marham, or call their booking line.
About treatments
Each guide walks through the procedure in 3D, step by step, with recovery and risks.
Laser stone surgery
Full guideWill I need a stent?
Often, yes. It depends on the stone's size, how long it was stuck and how the ureter looks during surgery.
Can large kidney stones be treated this way?
Small and medium stones often can. Very large stones are usually better treated with PCNL.
PCNL
Full guideWhy PCNL rather than laser through the urethra?
For large stones, PCNL usually clears the kidney in fewer sessions.
Is the scar large?
No. The keyhole is about a centimetre across.
Shockwave lithotripsy
Full guideDoes ESWL work for every stone?
No. Very hard, large or lower-kidney stones often respond better to laser surgery or PCNL.
Is it painful?
Most people feel tapping or mild discomfort, which is managed with pain relief.
TURP for enlarged prostate
Full guideIs surgery the only option?
No. Many men start with medicines. Surgery is considered when symptoms are bothersome or medicines are not enough.
Does TURP treat prostate cancer?
No. TURP relieves blockage from enlargement. Prostate cancer is assessed and treated separately.
Laparoscopic kidney surgery
Full guideCan I live normally with one kidney?
Most people with one healthy kidney lead a normal life. Kidney function is checked over time.
Can only part of the kidney be removed?
For some small tumours, yes. It depends on the tumour's size and position.
Varicocele microsurgery
Full guideDoes every varicocele need surgery?
No. Surgery is usually advised for infertility with abnormal semen results, pain, or a shrinking testicle.
When might fertility improve?
Sperm take about three months to develop, so changes are assessed from around three months onwards.
